12th Street Bakery Brings Sweets and Living Wage Jobs to East Austin
Baker Samantha Herod bakes for a greater cause

AUSTIN, Texas – July 30, 2015 – 12th Street Bakery announced today that it is open at 1208 Chicon in East Austin. The bakery, which serves breakfast pastries and desserts daily, plans to employ and train at-risk youth from the East Austin community.

“My hope is not only create a quality bakery with a loyal following but also to serve the greater good of the East Austin community,” said Samantha Herod, head baker and owner of 12th Street Bakery. “12th Street Bakery will serve as a training incubator to prepare students for living wage jobs as well as assist in developing life skills.”

Herod’s bakery trailer is opening at a new food park owned and operated by Mission Possible Austin, a local non-profit that serves the community at 12th and Chicon. Herod plans to bring on her first student employees in September. At-risk and non-college-bound youth will participate paid training program where they will learn basic baking skills, money handling and customer service, while earning a living wage. Along the way, Herod hopes to impress time management, budgeting and communication upon her young employees. 

12th Street Bakery sells a variety of baked goods including breakfast pastries, from croissants to turnovers and teacakes, and variety of desserts including cakes and cake slices, cupcakes, cookies and brownies. Prices range from $1.25 to $25. The bakery is currently open Tuesday through Saturday, 8:00 a.m. until sold out.

About Samantha Herod
Samantha Herod is the head baker and owner of 12th Street Bakery. She received her Associates Degree in Baking & Pastry Arts from Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts, Dallas in 2012. Since then, she has worked for Austin restaurants and bakeries including Baguette et Chocolat, Baked by Amy’s Ice Cream and Thai Fresh. Herod is passionate about intentional and living wage employment.
